Pokemon GO: How Ditto Works And How To Find One In Manchester

Players of the popular augmented reality game Pokemon GO have been celebrating the addition of Ditto, but many are having trouble finding the elusive creature.

Otherwise known as the Transform Pokemon, Ditto is number 132 in the game’s Pokedex and the first new Pokemon to be added to the game since its original launch in July. The character’s worldwide release came unannounced – but to much fanfare – on the 23rd of November, coinciding with the UK release of Nintendo 3DS titles Pokemon Sun & Moon.

Ditto is known in the main Pokemon series for its unique ability to disguise itself as any other Pokemon. In Pokemon GO, it is precisely this trait that makes it so difficult for players to find.

True to form, Ditto will never appear in the wild as itself, but will instead be disguised as a different species, only revealing itself after it has been caught by the player. Any Pokemon that appears on the map screen could be a Ditto, but research from dedicated players indicates that it will most often be mimicking a common Pokemon such as a Pidgey, Rattata, Zubat, or Magikarp.

To complicate matters further, Ditto is more resistant to capture than many of the Pokemon it may choose to copy, and much more likely to flee from battle. Therefore, common Pokemon with lower CP who break out of balls thrown at them should be of immediate interest for those hunting Ditto.

Another clue to watch out for is the ‘nearby Pokemon’ screen; if a Ditto is hiding nearby and has recently been caught by another player, it will appear as itself on the list. Players can then easily find it using the new tracking system, a long-awaited tool that developer Niantic added to the game earlier this week.

In this writer’s experience, Ditto often spawn outside Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School, or on Oxford Road opposite the Palace hotel. However, other players on Twitter have their own suggestions on where Ditto might be found.

Once caught, Ditto can be sent into battle at local gyms just like any other Pokemon. It’s signature move ‘Transform’ will cause it to copy its opponent’s type(s), base stats and attacks, though its level, IV’s and base Stamina will remain the same.

Pokemon GO has enjoyed renewed success in part due to Ditto’s release, but the legendary Pokemon Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo and Mew remain missing from the game. Currently, there is no public timetable for their addition, nor any Pokemon from subsequent titles in the main series.

Below is a map with suggested hotspots for Ditto as well as other Pokemon. If you would like to add to the map, please contact me via email at tom.cuthbertson@stu.mmu.ac.uk or on Twitter @tcuthbertsonmmu.

Black Friday A Success For The Gaming Industry

The Christmas shopping season is now well underway, and video games are once again at the top of many peoples’ gift lists.

The busiest shopping weekend of the year – or “Black Friday” as it has come to be known – sees business rise exponentially for any and every kind of retail outlet, but the video game industry always seems to do especially well, often playing host to some of the best deals of the season.

Perhaps the success can be chalked up to the popularity of

video games amongst younger audiences – the same people who are the main recipients of Christmas presents. Or perhaps it is a matter of simple mathematics. 25% off on a new PlayStation 4 is a saving of around 75 pounds; 25% off on a typical PlayStation 4 game means an extra 10 pounds in the consumers’ pocket. Such savings are hard to argue with.

I caught up with a sales assistant busy on the floor of the Arndale Centre’s GAME store, hoping to gain a greater understanding of what Black Friday meant for the industry. As we spoke, a painfully long queue of eager shoppers stretched from one side of the store to the other, providing a worthy challenge for the four tills waiting to serve them.

“Yesterday, we turned over about twice what we would have on a normal Friday or Saturday, if not more”, he revealed to me. He indicated that the store had been just as busy throughout the week, most notably for the midnight launch of Nintendo’s Pokemon Sun & Moon.

Console bundles are chief amongst GAME’s deals this holiday season. The retail outlet is providing savings as high as £150 for a 500 gigabyte Playstation 4 console bundled with two games and Now TV access.
